KMB Constructs a New Environmentally-friendly Bus Depot

In order to provide advanced support services for its modern bus fleet, KMB has decided to relocate its bus depot at Lai Chi Kok to the West Kowloon Reclamation. Today (Thursday, 19 September 2000), KMB held a Groundbreaking Ceremony at the site.

The New Bus Depot, located at Lot KX1992 of West Kowloon, has a site area of 23,300 square metres, enclosed by Hing Wah Street West and Lai Po Road. The New Bus Depot will be purpose built to provide maintenance for some 1,000 buses in the West Kowloon and South-West New Territories regions. It will support the operations of some 120 bus routes covering these regions, as well as a large number of cross harbour tunnel routes.

The New Bus Depot complex, with a total floor area of 44,374 square metres, will comprise two parts, a 3-storey bus depot for repair, maintenance and parking of buses, and a 6-storey administration building with a total usable floor area of 7,888 square metres providing logistic and support services.

The ground floor of the bus depot will be equipped with a bus refuelling area and a bus washing area, each of which can serve eight buses at the same time, as well as 64 service pits and 32 maintenance bays. Level 3 and Level 5 will accommodate 107 and 162 bus parking spaces respectively.

KMB Managing Director, Mr John Chan, said at the ceremony, "KMB aims to continually upgrade its service quality and to make our buses the mode of public transport preferred by most public transport users most of the time. The relocation of Lai Chi Kok Bus Depot to the West Kowloon Reclamation will not only enhance our bus fleet efficiency and reliability, but also mark a milestone for KMB in strengthening our commitment to providing passengers with quality bus service."

In order to provide KMB's modern bus fleet with advanced support services, the New Bus Depot will be equipped with a range of environmentally-friendly installations which include:

  • Waste Water Treatment System - The waste water produced during the daily operation of the depot will be filtered and chemically treated to ensure full compliance with statutory standards before discharging.

  • Energy Conservation Lighting System - Energy savings will be achieved through energy efficient light fittings and a pre-set timer system. Each floor of the depot will be divided into several lighting zones, each with high-bay light fittings equipped with two-stage switching controls to cater for different daylight conditions.

  • Full-Reclamation Bus Washing System - The fully automatic bus body washing machine will have a built-in water recycling facility. Large sediment particles and any oil or diesel in the waste water will be removed from the water collection tank. The recycled water can then be reused.

  • Environmentally-Friendly Fire Service Installation - To protect the ozone layer, the environmentally-friendly gas extinguishing compound NAFS-III will be used in all fixed sprayer units, meeting the standards laid down by the Montreal Protocol.

  • Ozone-Sensitive Air-conditioning and Ventilation Systems - The refrigerant R407C, which causes no depletion to the ozone layer, will be used in the air-conditioning system and the mechanical ventilation system. The systems will have zone control features to allow adjustments to be made according to demand.

Mr Chan added, " KMB's New Bus Depot will serve not only as an embodiment of KMB's awareness of its environmental responsibilities, but also as a vision of KMB's future development."

KMB's New Bus Depot will be completed at the end of 2001.
