Cathay Pacific releases June traffic figures


Cathay Pacific Airways carried 999,411 passengers in June, bringing the total for the first six months of the year to 5.89 million or 2.3% more than in the same period in 2000.

While the number of passengers rose marginally, the amount of seat capacity grew by 8.6%, causing the passenger load factor to fall by 3.8 percentage points.

The air cargo market remained weak. In June, Cathay Pacific carried 56,876 tonnes of cargo, a decline of 8.5% compared to the same month last year. For the first half of the year, cargo carried fell by 5.2% and the cargo load factor was 6.8 percentage points below the same period in 2000.

Cathay Pacific's General Manager Network Revenue Ian Shiu said: "Passenger demand is showing signs of weakness particularly for First and Business Class travel. Cargo volumes and yields have also dropped significantly due to the global economic slowdown and lower exports from Asia."
