JARDINE MATHESON GROUP COMPANIES
IN NEW SINGAPORE BENCHMARK SHARE INDEX
30th August 1998 - The new Straits Times Index being launched on 31st August 1998 in Singapore includes the shares of Group companies Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited and Hongkong Land Holdings Limited which have secondary listings on the local exchange. Also included is Singapore affiliate Cycle & Carriage Limited.
The new benchmark index, which is a broader value-weighted index, replaces the existing Straits Times Industrial Index which had been the leading stockmarket indicator in Singapore for the past three decades. The new index is based on the Stock Exchange of Singapore's new sector classifications and was designed by the publishers of The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings, in co-operation with the Stock Exchange.
Commenting on the launch of the Straits Times Index, Mr Alasdair Morrison, Managing Director of Jardine Matheson said, "We are pleased that the trading of our Group companies' shares in Singapore is being recognised in this market-based index. The new Straits Times Index has been well structured, and I am sure it will be widely followed by the international investment community."
