CONFIDENCE IN HONG KONG'S PROSPERITY AND STABILITY
REITERATED BY JARDINES' CHAIRMAN IN BEIJING
7th May 1997--The Chairman of Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited, Mr. Henry Keswick, and the Company's Managing Director, Mr. Alasdair Morrison, today met with China's Vice Premier, Mr. Zhu Rongji, at Zhongnanhai in Beijing. They were accompanied by Mr. Martin Barrow, Chairman of Jardine Matheson (China) Ltd. and Jardines' Chief Representative in China, Mr. Willie Huang.
"I was very pleased to meet Mr. Zhu in Beijing. He welcomed our range of activities and numerous joint ventures in China. His interest in the development of our Hong Kong businesses, in a number of which we have partners from the Mainland, was both positive and encouraging", Mr. Keswick said.
He added, "I stressed the Jardine Matheson Group's commitment to expanding its activities in Hong Kong as well as in Mainland China over the long term. It is a mark of confidence in the future Special Administrative Region and the concept of 'one country two systems' that multinational companies like Jardines continue to expand their operations there."
Mr. Keswick said, "Since the signing of the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984, the Jardine Matheson Group's number of employees in Hong Kong has doubled to 60,000 and it is the largest private sector employer in the future Special Administrative Region. Our Group believes in Hong Kong's prosperity and stability after China resumes the exercise of sovereignty."
Mr. Keswick said that he was particularly glad also to have had the opportunity to discuss Hong Kong with Mr. Lu Ping, the Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office who welcomed the development of Jardines' business in Hong Kong and in the Mainland.
The Jardine Matheson Group has a presence in 30 cities across China and is a partner in some 70 joint ventures employing 15,000 people. The Group has assets in excess of US$10 billion in Hong Kong, where it employs 60,000 people, and is actively pursuing new ventures in both Hong Kong and the Mainland.
