NEW BOARD APPOINTMENTS AT JARDINE MATHESON
20th March 1997 - Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited announced
today that Mr James Watkins and Mr Norman Lyle are to
join the Board as Executive Directors. They will succeed Mr Greg
Terry and Mr Christopher Cowan who are to retire during the year.
Mr Terry, Jardine Matheson's Legal Counsel who has been with the
Group for ten years, will retire to accept a senior investment
banking appointment in his home town of Melbourne, Australia.
He will be replaced in June by Mr Watkins who was a partner of
Linklaters & Paines and more recently, Legal Director of Trafalgar
House plc and Group Legal Director of the Schroders Group.
Mr Cowan, the Group's Finance Director since 1992, has decided
to return to the United Kingdom in July to rejoin his family after
five years in Hong Kong. He will be replaced by Mr Lyle, currently
the General Manager, Finance, of Zeneca Group plc.
Managing Director of Jardine Matheson, Mr Alasdair Morrison said,
"We are very sorry to see Greg and Chris leaving us. They
have both made major contributions to the Group in recent years
and we wish them every success in the future.
"We are pleased to welcome James Watkins and Norman Lyle
who will bring a wide range of international experience to the
Group, and I look forward to working with them at this exciting
time in Jardines' development."
Mr Watkins joined Linklaters & Paines as a solicitor in 1967
and became a partner in 1975. He was senior partner in Hong Kong
from 1986 to 1994. He has worked closely with Jardine Matheson
for a number of years, both in Hong Kong and in London. He is
to become Group General Counsel and a Director of Jardine Matheson
Holdings Limited.
Mr Lyle has had a successful career in multinational groups, Zeneca
and ICI, which he joined in 1971. He was closely involved in
the creation of Zeneca as Group Treasurer of ICI. In addition
to broad experience in the United Kingdom, he has worked in Kenya
and Malaysia. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants and is also a Fellow of the Association of Corporate
Treasurers.
