Noriko Barrow to Fire Jardine's Midnight Gun
Hong Kong, 31st December 2000 - The traditional Jardines' Midnight Gun Salute to the New Year is fired by Mrs Noriko Barrow, wife of Mr. Martin Barrow, a Jardine Matheson Ltd Director.
Mrs Barrow is active in charity and community services. She is currently Chairman of the Management Committee of the Wong Tau Han School for Spastic Children and is a council member of the Spastic Association. She has been active in the Arts Festival Society, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society and in many other areas of community service. Mrs. Barrow first lived in Hong Kong in the 1970s and has been a resident here since 1983. Martin Barrow is retiring from full time employment at Jardine Matheson at the end of March after 36 years with the Group.
The traditional ceremony in Causeway Bay has become a popular local event since the Gun was first fired on the New Year's Eve after the end of World War II over five decades ago. The event is often covered as a countdown to the New Year by local television and radio stations.
