DAIRY FARM EXPANDS TAIWAN OPERATIONS
WITH ACQUISITION OF MAY SOON SUPERMARKETS
Hong Kong/Taiwan, 29th September 2000 - The Dairy Farm Group announced today that it is expanding its supermarket operation, Wellcome Taiwan, with the acquisition of twelve stores from May Soon Supermarket Chain. The acquisition is subject to approval from the Fair Trade Commission.
Ed Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Wellcome Taiwan said, "The acquisition comes at the right time when we are looking to expand our presence, particularly in Central Taiwan, to continue building sales and profitability for the Group. The extensive range of fresh food and daily groceries offered by our enlarged network of operations will allow us to serve our customers better."
With the acquisition, Wellcome Taiwan will operate 108 outlets, which further strengthens its position as the largest supermarket chain in Taiwan.
Dairy Farm is a leading food and drugstore retailer in the Asia-Pacific Region. At 30th June 2000, the Group and its associates operated over 2,100 outlets, principally supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience stores and drugstores, employed some 78,000 people in nine territories. In 1999, they had sales of US$6.8 billion.
