(10 April 2006, Hong Kong:) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) announced today its tonnage throughput for March and the first quarter of year 2006. A total of 225,999 tonnes were handled in March, representing an increase of 7.2% against the same month last year. Tonnage throughput for the first quarter was 576,116 tonnes, up 8.2% against the same period last year.
Export volume showed a year-on-year growth of 8.5% and 7.7% in March and in the first quarter, with tonnage reaching 130,853 tonnes and 317,304 tonnes respectively. Export tonnage to all major markets registered growth - volume to Mainland China grew 19.7% year-on-year in March and 24.4% in the first quarter; while volume to Europe increased by 9.2% and 7.1% year-on-year in March and in the first quarter respectively. Tonnage to the U.S. also registered healthy growth - up 8.7% and 5.6% year-on-year for March and the first three months respectively.
A total of 60,135 tonnes of import cargo were handled in March 2006, up 5.4% year-on-year. The import sector was dominated by the intra-Asia trade, the tonnage of which accounted for more than 60% of the total import volume. Leading the growth was volume from Mainland China, which increased by 14.7% year-on-year in March and 25.3% in the first quarter. Cumulative import tonnage for the first quarter was 161,782 tonnes, up 5.1% year-on-year.
Transshipment volume for March increased 5.5% year-on-year - slower than the growth experienced in the previous months. Total transshipment volume from January to March was 97,030 tonnes, representing a 15.9% increase against the same period last year.
"It is encouraging to see volume growth in all sectors in the first quarter, underlying sustained growth in regional economies. We are optimistic that the growth momentum will be kept up in the coming quarters in view of the continued strong market tone on the Mainland," said Lilian Chan, Hactl's General Manager, Marketing & Customer Service.
