(7th October 2005, Hong Kong) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) released today its air cargo throughput for September, the third quarter and for the first nine months of the year.
Tonnage growth in September was driven primarily by the pre-National Day rush in the second half of the month. Volume for September was 215,833 tonnes - the highest monthly throughput to date. Year-on-year growth was 8.2%, which was marginally slower relative to the previous months'. Tonnage for the third quarter was 627,136 tonnes, up 10.3% year-on-year. Cumulative tonnage for the first nine months of 2005 was 1,755,760 tonnes, up 7.2% against the same period last year.
Export volume grew 8.3% year-on-year in September, with tonnage standing at 123,562 tonnes. Aggregate export tonnage for the three quarters was 984,303 tonnes, up 8.7% against the same period last year.
Import tonnage for September was 58,722 tonnes - up 2% year-on-year. Cumulative import tonnage for the first nine months of the year was 493,916 tonnes, down 5.1% on a year-on-year basis.
Transshipment volume for September increased 20.4% year-on-year - slower than the growth experienced in the previous months. Total transshipment volume from January to September was 277,541 tonnes, representing a 31% increase against the same period last year.
Hactl's General Manager, Marketing & Customer Service Lilian Chan said, "Although September figures showed slightly weaker growth, tonnage performance in absolute terms was rather satisfactory, with a number of peak handling records achieved. We are optimistic that the growth momentum will sustain as we enter into the cargo peak season in the fourth quarter."
