(7th July 2005, Hong Kong:) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) announced today its tonnage throughput for June, the second quarter and the first half of year 2005.
A total of 198,202 tonnes were handled in June, representing an increase of 8.6% against the same month last year. Tonnage throughput for the second quarter and for the first half year was 596,276 tonnes and 1,128,624 tonnes, up 7.9% and 5.6% respectively against the same periods last year.
"Growth in the second quarter was driven by strong export demand in June. Volume to the U.S. and European markets was strong, up 21% and 10.2% respectively in the month. We are happy to see sustained tonnage growth for the second quarter and for the first half of this year. Looking ahead, export volume is likely to continue to drive overall tonnage growth for the second half of the year," said Warren Bishop, Hactl's Marketing Director.
Export volume showed year-on-year growth of 11.9% and 10.4% in June and in the second quarter, with actual tonnage reaching 111,199 tonnes and 334,632 tonnes respectively. Demand was robust in the second quarter in major export markets : Mainland China (+18.5%), U.S (+16.4%), and Europe (+10.3%). Aggregate export volume for the first half year of 2005 was 629,268 tonnes, up 7.6% compared with same period last year.
The decline in the import sector remained level in June - down 7.9% year-on-year, with a total of 56,561 tonnes of imported goods being handled. Import tonnage for the second quarter was 168,278 tonnes, down 8.1% compared with the same period last year. Volume from major import markets all registered decline with the exception of Mainland China, which recorded strong growth of 39.2% in the second quarter. Cumulative import tonnage for the first half of the year was 322,277 tonnes, down 7.9% year-on-year.
The transshipment sector continued its growth momentum in June and in the second quarter, contributing to the overall tonnage increase. Transshipment volume for June and the second quarter was 30,442 tonnes and 93,366 tonnes, representing a year-on-year increase of 39.6% and 41.2% for the respective periods. Total transshipment volume for the first six months was 177,079 tonnes, up 31.9% against the same period last year.
