(7th July 2004, Hong Kong) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) announced today its tonnage throughput for June, the second quarter, and the first half year of 2004. The Company handled 183,374 tonnes in June 2004, representing a year-on-year growth of 17.3%. Tonnage throughput for the second quarter of this year was 553,246 tonnes, up 17.6% year-on-year. Boosted by strong export growth in both first and second quarters, tonnage volume for the first half year of 2004 reached 1,069,968 tonnes, up 16.4% compared with the same period last year.
Export volume grew 22.6% year-on-year in June 2004, with total export tonnage stood at 99,856 tonnes. Export tonnage growth was dominated by the European market, which accounted for 30% of the total export volume, and registered a year-on-year growth of 30.4% for June and 31.2% for the second quarter of 2004. Also driving export tonnage growth was volume to the U.S. market, which recorded a year-on-year growth of 18.1% for June and 16.3% for the second quarter. Cumulative export tonnage for the first half year of 2004 was 585,454 tonnes, up 21.7% compared with same period last year.
Import volume grew 16.0% year-on-year to 61,709 tonnes in June 2004. Intra-Asia trade continued to drive import volume growth, with notable year-on-year increase in the following markets for the second quarter: Mainland China (+41.3%), Republic of Korea (+31.8%), and Japan (+27.3%). Import tonnage for the second quarter was 183,454 tonnes, up 15.8%; while aggregate import volume for the first half of the year was 350,226 tonnes, representing an increase of 12.8% compared with same period last year.
