(6th May 2004, Hong Kong) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) today released its air cargo throughput for the month of April that showed continued volume growth.
In April 2004, the Company handled a total of 186,516 tonnes, representing an increase of 18.7% compared with the same month last year. Cumulative tonnage from January to April 2004 was 703,238 tonnes, up 16.1% year-on-year.
Export volume in April 2004 registered a 24.9% growth on year-on-year basis to 105,147 tonnes. Exports to Europe remained strong, up 34.4% compared with the figures in April 2003. Export growth was also supported by strong demand in the key markets of the U.S.A (+13.6%) and intra-Asia (+17.9%). Total export volume from January to April 2004 stood at 386,940 tonnes, up 22.3% year-on-year.
Import volume for April was 59,737 tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth of 14.4%. Import volume in April was strong in key Asian markets : Mainland China (+38.1%), Republic of Korea (+34%) and Japan (+21.6%). Aggregate import tonnage for the first four months of this year was 226,509 tonnes, representing an increase of 10.8% compared with the same period last year.
"Tonnage growth for April is encouraging, reflecting the vigour in the trading sector. The favourable comparison of tonnage figures on a year-on-year basis is also attributable to relatively weaker figures in April last year when cutbacks in passenger flights during SARS outbreak had driven down cargo carrying capacity and tonnage performance," said Simon Large, Hactl's Marketing Director.
