(8th April 2004, Hong Kong) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) reported sustained growth in air cargo volume for March and for the first quarter of 2004. In March 2004, Hactl handled 204,140 tonnes - an increase of 13.1% compared with the same month last year. Boosted by strong growth in export volume, tonnage of the first quarter of 2004 was up 15.2% year-on-year to 516,722 tonnes.
Export volume was driven up by the pre-Easter holidays rush in the first quarter to 281,793 tonnes, representing a growth of 21.3% on a year-on-year basis. Demand was robust in the key export markets of Europe and Asia, which registered a year-on-year growth of 28.3% and 20.7% respectively in the first quarter.
Aggregate import volume for the first quarter was 166,772 tonnes, up 9.5% year-on-year. Import volume growth in the quarter was strong in key Asian markets: Mainland China (+31.8%), South Korea (+31.6%), and Japan (+28.2%).
"We are happy to see strong growth in the first quarter of the year," said Simon Large, Hactl's Marketing Director. "As tonnage volume gradually increases, it is important that cargoes under our care are handled with efficiency and reliability. SuperTerminal 1 has a potential annual capacity of 3.5 million tonnes - an operating scale that positions us favourably to meet the demand arising from growing tonnage volume, while at the same time to maintain our performance standards for our customers and for the airfreight community," said Mr. Large.
