Hactl achieves further tonnage growth in second quarter

(11 July 2002, Hong Kong) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) recorded strong growth in air cargo throughput in the second quarter. The Company handled 160,192 tonnes in June 2002 - an increase of 27.4% against June 2001. Tonnage throughput in the second quarter and the first half year were 465,261 tonnes and 872,848 tonnes, up 24.1% and 17.4% respectively against the same periods last year.

"The growth sustained in the second quarter was primarily driven by strong export demand to the U.S. and Europe, surging 60.1% and 26.7% respectively year-on-year in the second quarter. Volume was impressive in June for exports to the U.S., up 73.8% against last year, amid a strong charter market," said Summit Chan, Hactl's Director - Marketing & Customer Service.

Significant year-on-year growth was also recorded in major Asian export markets in the second quarter : Korea (+38.3%), Japan (+23.5%) and South East Asian markets (+24.4%). Total export volume in the second quarter was 241,098 tonnes, up 36.5% against the same period last year. Cumulative export tonnage from January to June 2002 was 446,622 tonnes, representing a 26.9% year-on-year growth.

Growth in import sector continued to be driven by volume from the Asian markets in the second quarter : Taiwan (+36.7%), Japan (+28.8%), and Korea (+21.3%). Import volume for the second quarter was 164,223 tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth of 12.8%. Cumulative import volume for the first half of the year stood at 308,683 tonnes, increased by 7.5% compared with the same period last year.
