(10 June 2002, Hong Kong) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) announced that continuous strong growth in tonnage throughput was registered in May 2002. Total tonnage handled in May was 152,177 tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth of 25.1%. Cumulative tonnage from January to May 2002 reached 712,656 tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth of 15.3%.
The export sector took off in the month of May 2002, with throughput amounting to 77,894 tonnes, representing a surge of 36.1%. Exports to the U.S. continued to drive the growth, with a year-on-year growth of 52.8% being registered in May. Exports to Europe (+33%), Korea (+30.8%), Japan (+23.2%), and South East Asian markets (+25%) were also major catalysts for growth. Aggregate export volume from January to May 2002 amounted to 363,680 tonnes, representing a 24.1% increase compared with the same period last year.
Momentum has also kept up in the import sector in May 2002, with 55,171 tonnes being handled in the month, representing a growth of 15% compared with May 2001. Strong growth in imports from Japan (+35.4%) and Taiwan (+35.7%) were also registered. Total import volume for the first five months of 2002 was 252,297 tonnes, representing an increase of 5.8% compared with the same period last year. Growth in imports from Asian markets (+14.3%) offset the decline registered from the U.S.(-6.9%) and Europe (-5.8%) in the period from January to May 2002.
