Total export volumes from January to April 2002 stood at 285,786 tonnes, representing an increase of 21.2% compared with the same period last year.
Import tonnage for April amounted to 52,666 tonnes, representing a 7.6% year-on-year growth. Import volume in April was strong in key Asian markets : Taiwan (+38.6%), Japan (+17.8%) and Korea (14.8%). Aggregate import tonnage for the first four months of this year was 197,126 tonnes, representing an increase of 3.5% compared with the same period last year.
Hactl's Director-Marketing and Customer Service Summit Chan said, "Tonnage performance on a year-on-year basis is very encouraging, but it has to be borne in mind that trade volume was relatively weak last year. In absolute terms, if momentum keeps up, tonnage throughput will be catching up to the level in 2000."
