(Hong Kong : 16 April 2002) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) today reported encouraging air cargo growth in the first quarter of 2002 after decline in throughput last year.
In March 2002, Hactl handled 165,001 tonnes - an increase of 14.2% as compared with March 2001. Tonnage throughput for the first quarter was 407,587 tonnes, representing a growth of 10.5% as compared with the same period in 2001.
"Growth in the first quarter was driven by a surge in export volumes, a reflection of economic recovery in key markets. The tonnages were further boosted by the pre-Easter holiday rush," said Summit Chan, Hactl's Director - Marketing and Customer Service.
Export volumes in the first quarter of 2002 registered a 17.1% growth on a year-on-year basis. Demand was especially robust in key export markets of the USA (+21%), intra-Asia (+17.3%) and Europe (+10.5%).
Import volumes in the first quarter experienced modest growth of 2.0% as compared with the same period last year. Imports from the USA and Europe dropped by 11.1% and 6.9% respectively, but the decline was offset by strong growth in imports from Asian countries (+9.6%), the aggregate volume of which accounts for over 60% of the total import trade.
"It is very encouraging to see air cargo throughput rebound in all the key sectors. Volume is likely going to compare favourably on a year-on-year basis in Q2, owing to the comparatively weak trade conditions last year," Summit Chan said in a concluding remark.
