(Hong Kong, 21 January 2002) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (Hactl) today reported that its fourth quarter air cargo throughput had registered another decline, due primarily to continued weakness in the overall import trades and the export sector to the U.S.
In December, Hactl handled 146,449 tonnes, representing a year-on-year reduction of 3.2%. Total volume handled by Hactl for the fourth quarter and for 2001 were 455,358 tonnes and 1,591,311 tonnes, down 6% and 9% respectively compared with the same periods in 2000.
"The rate of volume decline in the overall trade narrowed, with some export sectors showing modest growth in December on a year-on-year basis. Imports, however, remained sluggish," said Summit Chan, Hactl's Director of Marketing & Customer Service.
Export volume dropped by 2.7% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, largely attributable to lower demands in the U.S.
Overall import volume reductions, on a year-on-year basis, were 12.2% for the quarter and 9% for the year. Imports from other Asian countries dropped by 7.1% in the fourth quarter compared with the same period in 2000, whilst those from Europe and the U.S. registered significant declines. For the year, imports from other Asian countries fell by 10.3%, Europe by 4%, and the U.S. by 12.9%.
"There are some signs of recovery, particularly in the export sectors. We can only be cautiously optimistic about the sustainability of the recovery, in light of the uncertainties in the U.S. and regional markets. In the meantime, we are pushing hard to implement our intermodal transport and I.T. initiatives to facilitate the logistics integration with the Pearl River Delta," Summit Chan said.
