(Hong Kong, 27 March 2003) Lamma Rock Products Limited (LRP), a subsidiary of Shui On Construction And Materials Limited (SOCAM; stock code: 0983), has won the Merit Award in the "Outstanding Greening Project Award 2002" under the Greening Effect category with its Lamma Quarry rehabilitation project, which has transformed the degraded landscape into a natural habitat of wildlife, plants and flora.
The rehabilitation of Lamma Quarry, located opposite to Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma Island, started in 1995. The design adopted an environmental and non-engineering approach, and turned the barren quarry into a verdant site that has attracted numerous species of wildlife such as egrets, kites, bamboo snakes, dragonflies and swallows. The site now features woodlands, a man-made lake, artificial bunds, slopes with concealed drainage and falcon nests, all designed to create a natural environment that blends with the surrounding hills. The project, with a rehabilitated area of 470,000 square metres, is the largest of its kind in Hong Kong.
The Outstanding Greening Project Award is organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and co-organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and the Institute of Horticulture (Hong Kong), aiming to promote greening and environment-conscious development in Hong Kong, to foster awareness and recognition of the landscape and horticulture professions, and to encourage good practice in these fields.
SOCAM, a member of the Shui On Group, was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1997 and is engaged in construction, construction materials and property development in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. Apart from SOCAM, the Shui On Group has a separate, non-listed property arm with investments in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and New York.
