SHKP sponsors Suicide Prevention Services

It has always been the spirit of Sun Hung Kai Properties' (SHKP) corporate culture to tackle challenges head-on and adopt a positive attitude about the future. In keeping with this, the company is encouraging Hong Kong's young people to face difficulties and adversity with strength. To promote this message, SHKP took the title sponsor role in a fund-raising walk for the non-profit organization Suicide Prevention Services (SPS), and Wendy Kwok led a team in the 'SHKP SPS Walkathon 2002'.

Betty Tung and Mrs Kwok officiated over the SHKP SPS Walkathon 2002 opening ceremony, along with Professor Iris Chi from the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Hong Kong and pop stars Eason Chan and 'Twins' the duo of Charlene Choi and Gilian Chung.

At the opening ceremony, Mrs Kwok said that SPS has been giving a helping hand to people suffering from extreme depression, comforting them and helping them to appreciate the value of life. The work is extremely important because it is easy for young people to become despondent and commit suicide these days, which is a tragedy. Mrs Kwok urged all young people to treasure their lives and never give up, saying that no problem is too big to be solved. Talking about problems with family, good friends or voluntary organizations can offer strength and hope to brave the storm and see sunny days again.

Established in 1995, SPS provides both telephone and face-to-face counselling for people with depression or who have attempted suicide. The agency has over 200 volunteers, providing assistance through a 24-hour hotline, outreach to the aged and preventative services for young people. With the social phenomena of youth suicide becoming more acute, SPS will concentrate its limited resources on tackling this problem in 2002, holding a series of seminars, exhibitions and leaflet campaigns to emphasize the value of life.
