SHKP subsidiary Kai Shing wins Government 'Outstanding Green Project Award'

Sun Hung Kai Properties' (SHKP) subsidiary Kai Shing Management Services recently won first prize in the 'Outstanding Green Project Awards 2000' under the Landscape Management category. The awards are jointly organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and the Society of Horticulture, Hong Kong. Kai Shing won for its outstanding performance in environmental protection and landscape management in Palm Springs and Royal Palms, and it was the only private estate management company to receive this award.

Kai Shing got the award mainly because its environmental landscape management plan called 'Friendly Neighbour of Mai Po'. Under the plan, the company established a 1300-metre long, 3-metre high buffer zone to the northwest of Palm Springs and Royal Palms, planted with trees native to Hong Kong. This forms a natural barrier to protect birds and other creatures against being disturbed by light from residents' houses. The trees are a valuable natural resource and offer a favorable habitat for wildlife.

Kai Shing uses environmentally-friendly methods to water the over 800 palm trees and other tropical plants in Palm Springs and Royal Palms. Plants need plenty of water to grow, especially during the dry autumn and winter weather. To avoid a huge waste of fresh water, Kai Shing uses purified water from the estate's own treatment facility, which helps the environment and allows the greenery to flourish. The estate also has flower beds that grow year-round, creating a more beautiful environment.

SHKP has always been one of Hong Kong's most environmentally-friendly property developers. In addition to green property management, the company follows environmental practices in property development and construction. It will also give serious consideration to adding environmental building features like sky gardens and balconies in future developments. SHKP's corporate culture embraces environmental protection, and it is committed to using natural resources wisely and improving residents lives at every level.
