The Belcher's to benefit from redevelopment plan and largest shopping mall in Western District

The Belcher's is a joint development by Shun Tak Holdings, Sun Hung Kai Properties, New World Development and Liu Chong Hing Investment. Phase 1 is almost ready for handover and the remaining units will be offered for sale soon. Daisy Ho, Deputy Managing Director of Shun Tak Holdings, Ball Wong, Senior Project Manager, and Au Yeung Hau Cheong, General Manager - Leasing with the Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Agency's Project Planning Department, met the media today (March 1) to describe the development's advantages, including the benefits of the comprehensive Western District redevelopment plan and The Westwood shopping mall, which will open in the third quarter of this year.

Ball Wong said that the Government has just announced a redevelopment plan for Western District that will be the largest scale on Hong Kong Island. The plan will rejuvenate the area as a modern environmentally friendly model city for residents and visitors alike, with a mass transportation network, greenbelt, waterfront promenade, cable car, school village and more.

Daisy Ho said that The Belcher's in the western Mid-Levels of Hong Kong Island will benefit from the transformation of Western District, becoming an exceptional landmark luxury residence along the MTR line. In addition, The Westwood, a large-scale prestige shopping mall to open in the third quarter of 2001, will offer a variety of retail outlets for residents, meaning that The Belcher's is sure to be exceptionally popular with property buyers.

Extended MTR Island Line with 'The Belcher's' station

According to Government plans, the existing MTR Island Line will be extended to Western District with potentially four stations at The Belcher's, Sai Ying Pun, Des Voeux Road West and Kennedy Town. Three possible escalator connections could link the MTR stations to the Peak and Pok Fu Lam. The proposed The Belcher's station and escalator will be built inside the property, to provide quick, comfortable access to different districts. At present, it is just a five-minute drive from The Belcher's to Central and three minutes to the entrance of the Western Harbour Crossing.

The government has adopted 'people-oriented' green concepts in its planning. The district will be primarily served by the future MTR line, so road construction will be minimized. The roads will also be covered in to reduce pollution, so residents of Western will enjoy a truly high-quality living environment.

New facilities for residents' enjoyment

The transformed Western District will have extensive green recreational areas. There will be a waterfront promenade where people can enjoy the fascinating Victoria Harbour, north Lantau Island and Tsing Ma Bridge, linking up with view corridors and green open spaces. Leisure and entertainment facilities may also be incorporated in appropriate locations along the promenade, which could extend to Central. The government is also considering a cable car route from Kennedy Town to the Peak for residents and tourists.

Largest shopping mall in Island West

On top of all this, at over 220,000 square feet The Westwood, a new shopping landmark, will be the only large-scale shopping mall in the area. Located inside the property, it will have walkways to the MTR station, as well as a wide variety of retail outlets to meet residents' daily needs, enabling visitors to enjoy shopping all the other leisure attractions.

Since the development is near Hong Kong University, an escalator will connect the mall and Pok Fu Lam Road next to the campus, so The Westwood will become a meeting point for university students. This is why the mall was named after Westwood, a small town in California near the famous University of California at Los Angeles.

Currently, over 70% of the mall is leased. And tenants will include the largest Wellcome superstore in Hong Kong, with over 60,000 square feet on the third floor. There will also be Chinese and western restaurants like Kam Boat Chinese Cuisine and Fast Food and Cafe Key West, and famous retailers. The Westwood will open in the third quarter of this year.
