HONG KONG, 11 February 2001 - The Parcville, jointly developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. and New World Development Co. Ltd., has added new 'environmentally friendly home concepts' to its construction plan. This initiative helped The Parcville become the first private residential estate in Hong Kong to be rated 'Excellent' in the Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment Method (HK-BEAM) by the Business Environment Council. The development's pre-sale consent has just been approved and will be launched to the public soon.
Mr Martin Tam, Manager of the Project Management Department of SHKP and Project Director of The Parcville, and Mr Andrew Choi, Senior Manager of the Property Development Department of New World Development Co. Ltd. received the award at a ceremony recently from Yvette Chan, Executive Director of the Business Environment Council.
Located at Po Yip Street, Tung Tau, Yuen Long, The Parcville comprises 14 low-density residential buildings of between 13 to 15 storeys. The development provides a total of 1,618 units. As one of the 'greenest' residential estates in Hong Kong, The Parcville boasts many unique conservation concepts. Among them is a spectacular 200,000 square foot landscaped garden that is the habitat for 2,500 kinds of plants. In addition, The Parcville also has various environmentally friendly property design and management features.
Ms Chan of the Business Environmental Council explained the three main reasons why The Parcville was the first residential development to receive the HK-BEAM's highest honour.
"Firstly, because The Parcville is a low-density development, the landscaping provides a green environment for residents. Besides, an ingenious air circulation principle in the semi-open green car park reduces the accumulation of polluting gases from vehicles. Secondly, the landscaped garden has PV-light poles. Also, there is an environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient electric shuttle bus service. Thirdly, all units can regulate the volume supply of flush water to help conserve a natural resource. Through a combination of these factors, The Parcville passes all environmental assessments, and that's why it is rated Excellent".
The developers of The Parcville were honoured to receive this award. Martin Tam of SHKP said, "The Hong Kong Government has actively promoted the 'environmentally friendly home concept' in recent years to improve Hong Kong people's quality of life. Being the two leading property developers in Hong Kong, SHKP and New World are actively constructing environmental friendly buildings. We have added new environmental protection elements to meet residents' demands for a greener and more comfortable indoor and outdoor environment."
Founded at the end of last year, the Business Environment Council was formed by the merger of the Private Sector Committee on the Environment and the Centre of Environmental Technology. To encourage the uptake of environmental excellence, the 'Building Environmental Certification' was implemented and administered to certify buildings according to HK-BEAM. This is a scheme for assessing the overall environmental performance of buildings. This is also the only environmental building certification scheme in Asia and is one of only three commercial assessment methods in the world.
Ms Chan stated the Councils' objectives as being "To encourage businesses and industries in Hong Kong to improve their environmental performance, the Council has organised related activities to foster growth in environmental protection. The Building Environmental Certification scheme is specifically for property developers, looking at site planning, layout, building and premises design, construction practices, and the whole life cycle to assess the grading of the buildings."

Mr Martin Tam, Manager of the Project Management Department of SHKP & Project Director of The Parcville, and Mr Andrew Choi, Senior Manager of the Property Development Department of New World Development Co. Ltd. received the HK-BEAM award presented by Ms Yvette Chan, Executive Director of the Business Environment Council.
