SHKP volunteers apply work experience to help the community
Hong Kong, June 14, 2012: Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative encourages staff to use their professional skills to help the needy as part of the developer's support for varied charities and promotion of a caring community.
The SHKP Volunteer Team gives seniors affected by urban redevelopment relocation assistance and does basic decoration in their new homes, in keeping with the caring spirit. Volunteers recently finished inspecting new flats, tiling floors and installing lights for elderly people moving to Tung Tau Estate.
SHKP Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Patrick KW Chan was one of the volunteers who helped with tiling floors and inspecting windows and door locks. He said: "This volunteer work reminded me of when I was an apprentice learning about interior decorating from my mentor. You need to stay focused and pay attention to detail for even simple tasks. I felt a bit tired, but it was worth it when I saw the seniors smiling and talking enthusiastically about their new homes and lives. I am happy to be able to use my time and effort to give back to the community, and the reward of helping others motivates us to do more."
Putting expertise to work
The Volunteer Team has helped relocate elderly households affected by redevelopment of Tung Tau (I) Estate in Wong Tai Sin in the past two years. They pay visits before and after the moves and hold social events to help the seniors settle into the neighbourhood. Volunteers also use their expertise in engineering, construction and property management to help seniors choose, inspect, decorate and clean their new homes.
Volunteer Team leader Michelle Leung said: "We have been helping relocate seniors affected by the redevelopment of Shek Kip Mei, So Uk and Ngau Tau Kok Lower estates for many years. Volunteers also support charities in their own time and some even get family members involved. Their wholehearted commitment to volunteering has a positive impact on the needy and spreads goodwill in the community to get more people involved."
