Sun Hung Kai Properties' (SHKP) property management subsidiaries Kai Shing and Hong Yip won a number of sectoral prizes in the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence including a gold for Millennium City and silver for Aegean Coast. The awards were given out by 11 organizations including the Environmental Campaign Committee, Environmental Protection Department, Advisory Council on the Environment and Business Environmental Council, and were presented by Chief Executive Donald Tsang.
Gold and silver for Kai Shing
The awards recognize outstanding green management in different industries and this year considered over 400 candidates. The stringent and comprehensive assessment began with written reports by the candidates followed up by inspections. The results were then evaluated by a panel of business council, professional and government representatives based on environmental leadership, partnership, planning and achievement. SHKP's property management subsidiaries got six awards including a gold for Millennium City following last year's gold for Park Island, a silver and four honourable mentions.
Millennium City wins for green innovation
Millennium City won gold for going beyond basic property management with innovative facilities and enlisting tenants' support for green initiatives. The development began a 'green certificate' scheme last year to encourage tenants' participation in waste-reduction and energy-conservation competitions to achieve a green city, and it continues to look for new ways to reduce waste. It developed a 'fourth-generation' recycling trolley to collect fluorescent tubes and light bulbs in addition to regular items, and has an organic farm and greenhouse where tenants have a rare chance to practice gardening in a densely-built area.
Millennium City was the first commercial building in Hong Kong with a car park lit using wind and solar power. Staff also developed a high-capacity air filtration system to clear particles and dust from units under renovation to maintain high indoor air quality.
Aegean Coast Green Buddy
Silver winner Aegean Coast practices green management with energy-saving lights, waste recycling and other innovative green measures. It has a Green Buddy mascot to promote eco-friendly messages to residents, holds regular carnivals and offers children incentives to make low-carbon living and energy saving part of their lifestyle. Kai Shing's Metroplaza, Grand Century Place and The Leighton Hill and Hong Yip's Pristine Villa won merit awards.
SHKP believes in 'building homes with heart' and follows green principles and management to reduce consumption as part of its efforts to promote sustainable development. It incorporates green elements in all aspects of business, from property planning, design and construction to material sourcing, landscaping and property management. Its subsidiaries Kai Shing and Hong Yip spread SHKP's green message to the over 250,000 households and more than 50 malls they manage. SHKP will continue staging a wide array of activities to encourage people to love the Earth as it works for a sustainable future for Hong Kong.
