SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation donates HK$15 million to fund talented mainlanders studying at CUHK

The SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation (The Foundation) aims to promote training and education for the country. As part of its commitment to the country's talent development, it has in collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) started the Mainland Students Scholarship Scheme in 2005. Over the past five years, it has donated HK$15 million to allow elite mainland students with limited financial means to complete four-year undergraduate courses at CUHK.

CUHK Provost Benjamin Wah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Jack Cheng and 18 mainland beneficiaries met Foundation Executive Director Amy Kwok and Director Kwong Chun and senior SHKP executives earlier to thank The Foundation for its generosity.

Ms Kwok said during the meeting that the CUHK's quality teaching staff and its international standing have produced many high-calibre graduates. The Foundation was pleased to work with the university on the programme that has enabled 30 mainland students to study in Hong Kong. She hoped that the students would value the opportunity to expand their perspective by interacting with Hong Kong students and use their knowledge to contribute to the nation.

The Foundation was set up in 2002 and has since provided scholarships for over 2,000 deserving students to do undergraduate courses at over ten mainland universities and educational institutions including Tsinghua, Zhejiang, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Nanjing, Fudan and Sun Yat-sen universities. It also sends talented mainland students to noted institutions for professional training overseas to facilitate mainland's development. The Foundation will have donated RMB 300 million by 2012 to support education and the preservation of culture and heritage on the mainland. A total of 5,000 students will benefit from its education initiatives.

CUHK started admitting mainland students through the National Colleges and Universities Enrollment System in 2005. The system was expanded in 2007 to cover 25 provinces, and the university took in 260 mainland students in 2009. All the students sponsored by The Foundation were selected under the system.
