SHKP sponsors the fourth Ngong Ping Charity Walk
1,500 people walk to promote environmental awareness

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) encourages environmental protection and healthy living. It was a diamond sponsor of the 2010 Ngong Ping Charity Walk; the fourth year in a row it has supported the event.

Over 1,500 people took part, including three SHKP teams. SHKP won an Excellent Fundraising award for its efforts and two of its teams came second with a time of 3 hours 6 minutes and another fifth with a time of 3 hours and 30 minutes in the 17km Explorer category.

The Walk was organized by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association and opened by Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau, Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association Chairman Michael Wong, Organizing Committee Chairman Terry Liu, Ngong Ping 360 Managing Director Li Yan-tai and Hong Kong Award for Young People Chairman Simon Ho.

There were four routes: the 23km Challenger, 17km Explorer, 8km Leisure and 8km School Team. There were over 1,500 hikers aged 6 to 75. The School Team category had the highest turnout with 746 participants. Walkers had to finish courses of different difficulties within three to eight hours, depending on the category. The routes covered conservation areas including the Ngong Ping Trail, Shek Pik Reservoir and a mangrove forest, plus heritage sites like the Po Lin Monastery, Tian Tan Buddha, Wisdom Path and other temples. The participants got exercise, enjoyed tranquil nature scenes and learned about local ecology of Lantau. There were interactive games and guided tours along the Leisure and School routes to teach walkers about conservation.

The Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association is a non-profit charitable organization affiliated with the International Youth Hostels Association. It has served Hong Kong for 36 years and its membership exceeds 30,000. The association provides travellers with safe, comfortable, and friendly accommodation at affordable prices and promotes multicultural exchanges and awareness of nature.
