HIT breaks world record for vessel productivity

[Hong Kong - 13th April 2000] Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) has set a new world record for vessel productivity of 236 container moves per hour.

The quay cranes unloaded a total of 1,097 containers (1,921 TEU) from APL China in less than five hours on 12th April 2000. This exceeded HIT's previous record of 187 moves per hour for an Evergreen vessel set in February this year. It is also a new worldwide record, breaking previous record of 234 moves per hour achieved by PSA on 15th January 2000.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Justin Kent, Managing Director - Hong Kong and South China of APL, the fifth largest ocean transportation and logistics company in the world, said, "We are pleased to have scored a new world record with HIT. We share their commitment to continuously increasing operation efficiency and providing excellent customer service."

HIT's Managing Director Mr. Eric Ip is delighted with the new record. "At HIT, we are constantly driving to increase productivity and efficiency in every aspect of our operation to maintain our competitive edge in the industry."

As the largest container terminal operator in Hong Kong, HIT accounts for about 60 per cent of the throughput at the Kwai Chung Container Port. The Company has consistently won industry awards for its efficiency and high service standards. HIT is a subsidiary of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), a global independent port operator and developer. HPH Group handled over 17.9 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent units) in 1999.
