Evolving HGC GlobalCentre data
centres into greener facilities

Watson Centre facility becomes first data centre in the Hong Kong
and mainland China region to attain ISO 50001 energy management standard
presented by SGS Hong Kong Limited

Hong Kong, 10 December 2014 - HGC GlobalCentre Limited (HGCGC), a joint venture between Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH, stock code: 215) and Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited (stock code: 1) today announced energy management measures that position its two data centres as new generation facilities capable of even greener sustainable development.

Deployment of a Vigilent's1 dynamic cooling management system at the Cavendish Centre in Wong Chung Hang now boosts energy efficiency by reducing the volume of power consumed by air-conditioning. And the Watson Centre facility in Kwai Chung has been awarded ISO 50001 energy management system certification - the first such accreditation for data centres in the Hong Kong and mainland China region presented by SGS Hong Kong Limited, one of the world's leading certification companies - after adopting the standard. These bold moves underscore HGCGC's pioneering efforts in improving energy conservation.

Dynamic cooling management system cuts power consumption
The cooling management system is an automatic computer room air-con (CRAC) control system that draws on artificial intelligence to cool data centres by means based on the temperature of IT equipment air intake.

This new deployment at HGCGC's Tier 3+ data centre in Wong Chuk Hang covers 80 chilled-water CRACs and more than 1,100 racks over a gross floor space of 120,000 square feet. The system aims to slash annual air-con electricity consumption and carbon emissions by a hefty 30%. As a result, partial Power Usage Effectiveness (pPUE) - one of the key industry data centre energy efficiency metrics - is expected to improve by more than 10%. Energy dollars saved will be reinvested in ongoing data centre enhancement to the ultimate benefit of customers.

Accredited with ISO 50001 certification by SGS Hong Kong Limited
Launched earlier this year, HGCGC's Kwai Chung facility is currently the first and only data centre in the Hong Kong and mainland China region to achieve ISO 50001 certification presented by SGS Hong Kong Limited.

The standard was established in 2011 to help organisations maximise utilisation efficiency of energy resources, minimise emission of greenhouse gases and improve cost-effectiveness by managing consumption of energy. ISO 50001 follows a plan-do-check-act lifecycle designed to improve an organisation's energy management system.

Data produced by the Watson Centre's energy measures enables better decision-making in terms of consumption. Results are then assessed, as part of a recurring policy review process, to achieve continual improvement in energy management.

HTHKH's Chief Operating Officer, Jennifer Tan, said: "Demand for data centre services has soared as a result of cloud computing and eCommerce. In fact, the Hong Kong data centre market is expected to expand at a company annual growth rate of about 15% to reach US$802.6 million in 2019 2."

She added: "In the course of growing HGCGC's business, we will continue to adopt feasible energy-saving measures to reduce costs, benefit our customers and achieve sustainable development in the best interests of the environment."

Plans for the next two years include installing the Vigilent system at the Watson Centre and implementing ISO 50001 at the Cavendish Centre. Other green initiatives already implemented at the two data centres include:
