Professor Wang Xuan Awarded China's "Nobel Prize"
- State Supreme Science & Technology Award

(Hong Kong - 2 February 2002) Chairman of the Board of Founder Holdings Limited (SEHK: 418), Professor Wang Xuan, was awarded the State Supreme Science & Technology Award, yesterday at the People's Hall by President Jiang Zemin, which is China's equivalent of the Nobel Prize, recognizing those making breakthrough contributions to China's frontier technological developments. This year is the second year of such Awarding; and the Award is to be conferred to no more than 2 winners each year.

At the Award Presentation Ceremony, Premier Zhu Rongji highly appraised the contributions made to the Society and the Economy by Professor Wang's Chinese Electronic Publishing Systems. Compared to the "Generation-II" and "Generation-III" Publishing Systems, then widely used respectively in the Japanese and the European publishing markets, Professor Wang's "Generation-IV" Publishing System was a big stride forward, initiating new methods for describing Chinese characters to facilitate easy and fast processing of Chinese characters by computer.

Since the adoption of Professor Wang's Electronic Publishing System by China's Economic Daily in 1987, which then became the world's first Chinese-language newspaper to have achieved full-page output, over 90% of newspapers and publishers in China have taken the stride from the stage of lead-type printing right over to that of electronic publishing and printing. Early 1990s saw Professor Wang and his research team stepping on to develop the technology for China's radio and television industry, drawing largely on their unique technologies and experiences in simultaneous computer processing of text files and graphic effects. In late 1990s, with a comprehensive understanding of technology development trends in the Internet era, Professor Wang and his research team came up with other advanced technologies and products, such as Computer -to-plate (CTP), eBook and network security solutions, all of which contributed substantially to China's multi-media industry.

Professor Wang also made great contributions to the overseas media markets, not only the overseas Chinese-language media market, but also non-Chinese media markets (such as Japanese and Korean). In 1992, a highly advanced color electronic publishing system was the answer of Professor Wang and his research team, to the need from more and more overseas newspapers to get printed in color. Soon afterwards, the System was adopted by more than 80% of overseas Chinese-language newspapers.
