FIRST PACIFIC NAMES CEO FOR TELECOMS IN GREATER SOUTHERN CHINA

First Pacific Company Limited announced Tuesday that Ian Stone has been named President and Chief Executive Officer for the Group's telecommunications businesses in the Greater Southern China area -- comprising Pacific Link Communications Limited in Hong Kong, and newer businesses in Taiwan and China's Fujian and Guangdong provinces. The position is effective from 1st July.

As part of his new duties, Mr. Stone, 46, will succeed Henry Goldstein as President and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Link. Mr. Goldstein stepped in as interim head of the business in December 1996, in addition to his responsibilities as Executive Director of Asia Link Holdings Limited, the holding company for all of First Pacific's other telecommunications investments. Mr. Goldstein will continue to retain his position at Asia Link.

Mr. Stone has spent 27 years in the telecoms industry with Cable & Wireless plc and Hongkong Telecommunications Limited, and has extensive experience across the UK and Asia-Pacific region. Based in Hong Kong since 1990, he recently served as Commercial Director of Hongkong Telecom, prior to which he was Director of Cable & Wireless's Asian mobile telephone operations and Managing Director of Hongkong Telecom CSL.

"The hiring of Ian Stone marks an important step in strengthening Pacific Link's standing in the marketplace," said Mr Goldstein. "He brings a wealth of local and regional experience to our team, and we are confident that he will provide the leadership and talent to bring us to the next stage of our development, which includes the rollout of our PCS service in July."

First Pacific's telecommunications operations have more than 750,000 subscribers in Greater Southern China, the Philippines, Indonesia and India.
