First Pacific Company Wins Two PCS Licences in Taiwan

First Pacific Company Limited is pleased to announce that its affiliated company, Smart Link Communications Inc., ("Smart Link"), was selected as the winner of two PCS (DCS-1800) licences in Taiwan. Smart Link won licences to serve the Central and Southern regions of Taiwan with a combined area of almost 12 million people, which represents more than 55 per cent of the country's population.

Smart Link is a Taiwanese joint venture in which First Pacific has a 16.6 percent shareholding. First Pacific's share of the investment will be approximately US$30 million.

First Pacific's Taiwanese partners in Smart Link are the Tuntex Group, Holmsgreen Lai Lai Department Store and China Development Corporation.

Most consortia bidding for the licences involved international telecommunications companies partnering with Taiwanese companies. Of the international companies, Smart Link was the only Asian telecommunications company to be awarded a licence.

Smart Link plans an aggressive build-out of its networks during 1997.

Henry R. Goldstein, Executive Director of Asia Link, First Pacific's telecommunications arm, stated "Taiwan presents an excellent opportunity in an underdeveloped mobile phone market. Today, only 4.5 per cent of the population has a mobile phone and there is a waiting list of over 400,000 potential customers. With a GDP of US$13,235 per annum (31st December 1995), we anticipate a very successful operation in Taiwan".
