Operating costs

• Staff costs decreased as the result of a reduction in the number of employees.

• The reduction in inflight service and passenger expenses arose primarily from improved cost controls.

• The increase in landing, parking and other route operating expenses was due to both exchange rate movements and the higher charges incurred at the Hong Kong International Airport.

• The decrease in fuel cost was due to lower fuel prices and the increased use of more fuel efficient aircraft.

• Aircraft maintenance costs reduced as a result of a younger average fleet age.

• Depreciation and operating lease charges increased as a result of the acquisition of new aircraft and the short-term charter costs incurred in June.

• Net finance charges increased due to lower returns being achieved on our short-term funds and a higher level of borrowings.
