Operating costs

• Route costs decreased reflecting the drop in passenger numbers.
• The decrease in fuel cost was due to lower fuel prices compared with 1997.
• Aircraft maintenance costs decreased as a result of a younger average fleet age and lower labour costs.
• Exchange losses realised on repayment of borrowings decreased because of the relatively strong Hong Kong dollar.
• The decrease in net finance charges reflects movements of exchange and interest rates, and higher interest earnings from cash deposits.

Note a: The daily weighted average was 3,384 million shares (1997: 3,433 million shares).
