MACQUARIE BANK APPOINTS NEW DEPUTY CHAIRMAN

Macquarie Bank Executive Chairman, David Clarke, today announced the appointment of Mark Johnson as the Bank's new Deputy Chairman following Bryan Kelman's retirement from the position.

Mr Kelman, 74, who has had a long and distinguished business career, and has served as a member of the Board since the Bank's inception in 1985, foreshadowed at this year's Annual General Meeting his intention not to seek re-election as a non-executive director at next year's Annual General Meeting.

"Bryan has made an enormous contribution to the Board of Macquarie Bank and its predecessor Hill Samuel Australia Limited, and has been deputy chairman since 1992. His insight and vast business experience has benefitted the Bank in innumerable ways and we thank him for his valuable contribution as Deputy Chairman," Mr Clarke said.

Mr Kelman began his career in the construction industry and joined CSR in 1966 as deputy general manager for 10 years to 1982, and then as Chief Executive Officer from 1983 to 1987.

Mark Johnson joined Macquarie Bank in February 1987 as an Executive Director of the Bank and Chairman of its Corporate Services Division. He was previously joint Managing Director of Hill Samuel Australia Limited with David Clarke from 1971 to 1977 and an Executive Director of Hill Samuel & Co. London until 1980.

He was founding Managing Director of Australian Bank in 1981 and resigned from that position in 1986 before rejoining Macquarie Bank. He is deputy chairman of The Australian Gas Light Company, chairman of Macquarie Infrastructure Group and a director of Biota Holdings.
