The Hong Kong and China Gas Co was founded in 1862. The company's principal businesses are the sales of towngas and gas appliances. Towngas, produced at the company's Tai Po plant (98%) and the Ma Tau Kok plant (2%) in Hong Kong, mainly serves the needs of domestic, commercial and industrial customers for cooking, heating water and other purposes. The total length of distribution mains is 2,050 km as at 31 December 1996, and the company is serving over 1 million customers in the territory. In China, the company has established joint ventures in Panyu, Zhongshan and Fangcun.
